The Hatters take on the Stags at the One Call Stadium tomorrow
The Hatters go into Monday’s match against Mansfield hoping to make it three wins from four after a disappointing draw with Leyton Orient on Friday.
Fourth placed Town now find themselves eight points short of Portsmouth who sit third with just four games remaining.
The Stags on the other hand will be looking to continue their decent run of form since the arrival of former Rotherham United and Leeds United boss Steve Evans, as they push to close the gap on the play-off places, having won three of their last five games.
Last time Nathan Jones’ team took on Mansfield, Matt Green’s early opener was cancelled out by Cameron McGeehan’s long range effort.
Green has kicked on this term and has netted 13 times, helping his side move into tenth – just two points shy of seventh place.
After the draw against Orient on Good Friday, Town assistant-manager Paul Hart said the Hatters need to ensure they win tomorrow if they are to maintain their place in the play-offs as well as continue their vein of form.
He explained: “We have got to win. Our aim was to win both matches over the Easter period. We have drawn one, a win would make it look a good Easter.
“Like every game, we are approaching them to win.”
Hatters striker Danny Hylton notched his 25th goal of the season against the O’s, but is now walking a tightrope having picked up 13 yellow cards this term, with the Town looking more likely to have to settle for a place in the play-offs therefore extending the amount of matches they have to play for the rest of the season.
Hart continued: “Danny’s been pretty good over the past month and a half, two months.
“He gained one last week (at Barnet), and I think we’ll probably look at each game as it comes, see where we are, see what’s happening and make decisions accordingly, but it’s a knife-edge for us.
“Equally he is, in my opinion, the best centre forward in the league and it would be a hard job leaving him out at any time.
“But the play-offs are important and it’s a consideration we have to take.”
Tomorrow’s game at the One Call Stadium will be refereed by Mark Brown. The East Yorkshireman has handed out 36 yellow cards and one red card in the 14 EFL fixtures he has overseen this term.
