Louie Watson said his first league start for Luton Town was a ‘special moment’ and vows there is a lot more to come as he looks to become a mainstay in the starting line-up.

The midfielder has had to bide his time but was grateful to make his third appearance for the club and play a part in the club’s third successive victory over the Christmas and new year period against Huddersfield Town.

Watson, 21, is no stranger to Championship football having played in the division 13 times for Derby County previously.

Nevertheless, the former West Ham academy product said: “It was a special moment for me, getting my first start for the club, but obviously it was most important that we got the three points and continued the run, so it was a positive night all round really.

“From a personal perspective I thought I had a solid game. Kept it simple, tried to play forward at times, do the basics like the gaffer wants from all of us really, and I think that’s quite evident in the way the boys play anyway, so I was happy with my performance but I know that there’s a lot more to come.”

The Croydon-born central midfielder was one of nine signings in the summer transfer window and spoke of how much he has enjoyed being part of the club – a group he believes is ready to ‘do something special’.

“Derby was a top club, I’ve not got a bad word to say about them, everyone was good there," said Watson when asked about his time at Pride Park, which ended with relegation to League One against the backdrop of points deductions for the Rams being in administration.

"But obviously coming here now, it’s shone a light on Luton as well. From top to bottom, everyone works at 100 per cent and the club is punching above their weight. This group is ready to do something special. Everyone is working at 100 per cent and they are ready to make that next step, so I think it’s important to continue the run, whether it’s in the cup or in the league.

“Coming here showed me how honest the group is. I think there are no individual people who want the limelight, everyone wants to share it and it shows in the performances. There are no individuals in this team, it is a team – and the boys, since I’ve been here, have been nothing but nice to me. I haven’t got a bad word to say about anyone, not the staff, nor the players, and it’s made it an easy transition.”
